Way
Home
A
number of children's novels have been written about homeless children.
Way Home is a picture book for older readers that tells us of a young
boy rescuing a cat in the threatening city, a city that could be anywhere
in the world. The final scene shows us the boy with the cat safely reaching
'home' - a box in an abandoned city building. The cat becomes the family
for this boy with no name, his past unknown and his future left in the
air.
The charcoal and pastel illustrations are packed with symbolism, including
scenes and icons borrowed from fine art. Greg uses light and dark to most
powerfully delineate the world of the protagonist and the wider society.
