Ilse van Garderen Illustrator Profile

Ilse was born into an artistic family with a Grandmother who was a teacher, storyteller and ran her own radio programme. Ilse's mother, an accomplished artist, encouraged her to paint and draw from an early age.

Ilse has studied at the Julian Ashton Art

School in Sydney, sculpture classes with Tom Bass and oil painting and egg tempera with Brian Blanchard.

When illustrating, llse's dummies are very rough and she uses a lot of time in visualising and changing things. The hard gestures and facial expressions are clarified by quick sketches so that the spontaneity is not lost.

Medium: Ilse uses 6B pencil on watercolour paper. Sketches are 'fixed' then pen and ink to strenghthen lines before watercolour washes are used. White gouache is used as a highlight in the final stage.
